HOW TO CARE FOR HANDMADE CERAMICS, MADE IN TUNISIA:
A handmade Tunisian ceramic oven tray, like other artisanal ceramics, will react to heat and age in specific ways depending on its quality, firing process, and usage:
👉🏻 Heat Resistance: Tunisian ceramics, especially those crafted for kitchen use, are typically fired at high temperatures, making them durable and heat-resistant. However, they must be gradually heated. Sudden temperature changes (thermal shock) can cause cracking, so it’s important to avoid placing a cold tray directly into a hot oven or taking a hot tray and putting it on a cold surface.\
👉🏾 Durability Over Time: With proper care, a Tunisian ceramic article can last for many years. However, the glaze might age over time, showing signs of wear or discoloration. This is a natural part of the aging process, giving the ceramic a unique patina that many find attractive.
👉 Care and Maintenance: Avoid using metal utensils, which can scratch the surface, and always handwash the ceramic with mild soap to preserve its finish. If exposed to extreme heat repeatedly or used in dishwashers, the glaze might weaken, and fine cracks (known as crazing) could appear on the surface.
👉🏽 Wear and Patina: Over the years, the tray may develop a patina, which adds to its charm. However, improper care could result in more significant damage, like chipping or cracking, especially if the ceramic is not high-fired or is made with more delicate techniques.
THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN PURCHASING ZOUZ IN CERAMIC COLLECTION:
Our ceramic collection is not designed for oven use, even though they can retain heat beautifully.
To preserve their original condition, avoid placing wet or oily foods in the terracotta bowls, like our Sunset Bowl. However, if you’re someone who loves a piece with character, feel free to let them show the marks of life—they tell a story all their own! :)
Overall, a Tunisian handmade ceramic, if treated with care, will age gracefully and remain a beautiful, functional piece in the kitchen for many years.
